One-Shoulder Dresses: The Most Flattering Neckline in Occasion Wear
If you asked a stylist to name the single most universally flattering neckline in occasion wear, most would say one-shoulder. It is not a coincidence that it turns up on red carpets year after year while other trends come and go.
Here is why it works, and how to wear it properly.
The reason it flatters
Three things happen at once with an asymmetric neckline:
It creates a diagonal line. Diagonals lengthen. A straight strapless neckline cuts horizontally across the body, which shortens the torso. A single strap running from shoulder to opposite underarm draws the eye on a slant, and the whole upper body reads longer.
It breaks symmetry in a useful way. Perfectly symmetrical outfits can look static. The off-balance line adds interest without adding volume or embellishment.
It frames the collarbone and one shoulder. This is the most elegant part of the upper body, and a one-shoulder cut puts a frame around it while covering the other side.
The variations, and what each does
Clean single strap — the purest version. Minimal, formal, and the most versatile. The women's one-shoulder evening dress at £27.90 is the entry point.
One shoulder with a sleeve — a draped or fitted sleeve on one side, bare on the other. Warmer and more formal. Good for winter weddings.
One shoulder with a bow or embellishment — the strap becomes the statement. The black and white one-shoulder bow midi at £57.04 is an example. Skip the earrings entirely with this one.
One shoulder with a high slit — the most dramatic combination. A diagonal at the top and a vertical at the bottom. The one-shoulder sleeveless high slit long dress at £42.90 is a proper black-tie option.
One shoulder mini — for parties rather than formal events. The one-shoulder backless mini at £28.90 and the one-shoulder backless slit dress at £29.90.
Styling rules
Leave the bare shoulder bare. No bag strap across it, no shawl over it. The whole effect depends on that shoulder being visible. Use a clutch rather than a shoulder bag.
Hair matters. Sweeping hair to the covered side and leaving the bare shoulder exposed is the classic and it works. Hair down on both sides hides the neckline you paid for.
Earrings, not necklaces. A necklace fights the diagonal. Drop earrings on both sides balance the asymmetry at the top of the body.
Skip the blazer. It defeats the point entirely. If you will be cold, choose a one-shoulder dress with a sleeve instead, or bring a wrap to remove indoors.
What to wear underneath
This is the common sticking point and it has a simple answer: a one-shoulder bra, or a strapless bra with one strap removed and converted.
Most convertible multiway bras include a one-shoulder configuration. Check yours before you buy anything new.
For fitted one-shoulder styles, a strapless shaping bodysuit from our shapewear collection gives you support and smoothing at the same time, with no strap question at all.
Fashion tape along the single strap stops it sliding during the evening — a small thing that makes a noticeable difference by hour four.
Events it suits
One-shoulder works across almost the entire occasion calendar: winter weddings, black-tie dinners, work Christmas parties in a midi or maxi length, New Year's Eve, and formal events of most kinds. It is one of the few necklines that reads as elegant at a wedding and as striking at a party, depending purely on the length and fabric you choose.

FAQ block:
What bra do you wear with a one-shoulder dress? A one-shoulder bra, or a convertible multiway bra reconfigured to a single strap — most multiway bras include this setting. For fitted styles, a strapless shaping bodysuit removes the strap question entirely while smoothing the torso.
Are one-shoulder dresses flattering? Yes, unusually so. The diagonal neckline lengthens the torso, breaks up horizontal lines across the body, and frames the collarbone, which is why it appears on red carpets consistently rather than as a passing trend.
What jewellery goes with a one-shoulder dress? Earrings rather than a necklace. A necklace competes with the diagonal line of the neckline. Drop or statement earrings on both ears balance the asymmetry at the top of the body.
Can you wear a one-shoulder dress to a wedding? Yes. In a midi or maxi length and a solid colour, one-shoulder is one of the most appropriate and elegant wedding guest necklines available.
